Make It Stick: How Memory Athletes Perform and How their Techniques Can Help You
How can a person memorize a deck of cards in under 22 seconds? Or remember 364 digits in order after hearing them once (the classic digit span task)? Or memorize 300 random words in order in 15 minutes? This presentation will come in two parts. Roddy Roediger will speak on how psychologists have approached the topic of mnemonic techniques and present examples of how they are misunderstood and underutilized. He will also discuss results from his collaborative studies of memory athletes both on memory tasks and on other cognitive tasks requiring focused attention. Nelson Dellis, the 2012 U.S. Memory Champion, will discuss his person-action-object system for memorizing and will demonstrate how it works. He will provide insight into the world of memory athletes and their remarkable performances that produced the records cited above.
