Position Summary:

The Associate Directors (ADs) for the newly created Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Research will work with the Director to provide comprehensive and robust educational support to faculty members and graduate students to meet their broad needs. They will work with colleagues who are teaching on-site, on-line and hybrid courses, to facilitate their professional development as educators. The ADs will continually develop, implement and assess programs to meet the changing needs of faculty, students, employers, and the higher education landscape, with the goal of maximizing students’ deep learning.

Responsibilities include working at the university, college, and department level to share research on learning and teaching to apply to the design and implementation of curricula, and at the individual level to help faculty colleagues and graduate students apply that research to their particular teaching situations. The ADs will also help faculty to evaluate if, when, and which technology might meet their educational needs or challenges and enhance students’ learning, and support faculty moving from on-site to on-line or hybrid courses. They will collaborate with faculty on grants and educational publications, and engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Finally, they will work closely with other units on campus that support education to leverage other perspectives as well as knowledge and skill sets, and collaborate to provide seamless support to the faculty.


Candidates must have a doctoral degree, demonstrated evidence of effective teaching experience in higher education, and collaborative experience working on projects, grants or publications with colleagues across disciplines. Candidates should have foundational knowledge of the learning sciences, and the use of technology to promote learning and teaching in various modes (i.e., on-site, on-line, hybrid). Candidates should have experience doing workshops; consulting with faculty across disciplines; writing and receiving grants with colleagues; a few refereed research publications in appropriate areas; and some national exposure, for example, through publications, work on editorial boards, and grant reviewers for major agencies, as manuscript reviewers for refereed journals, etc. At least 5-7 years experience in faculty development is strongly preferred. Candidates must also be able to maintain confidentiality and exercise a high level of discretion and independent judgment.
