The Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), Feinberg School of Medicine is recruiting for two faculty positions in psychometric science: a tenure track open rank position, and a non-tenure track position for junior-mid-career faculty (assistant-associate). The Department provides a unique scientific home for applied researchers who integrate biomedical and social science approaches to improvement of health and health care delivery across the lifespan (www.mss.northwestern.edu), and promotes scientific integration across Northwestern’s biomedical and life sciences campuses. MSS provides rich resources for conducting research including a broad scientific portfolio in outcomes science, Quantitative Methods and Applied Health Informatics Cores, and varied expertise across clinical areas and throughout the lifespan. MSS and its Center on Patient-Centered Outcomes within the Institute for Public Health & Medicine have an extensive array of funded research focused on patient-centered outcomes including outcomes measurement, psychometrics, quality of care, symptom management, and comparative effectiveness research.
Ideal candidates will have expertise that complements existing departmental strengths in measurement science and its application to clinical care and research. We are especially interested in candidates with a scientific focus on application of a range of psychometric techniques to health outcomes, particularly quality of life and/or clinical care and decision making. Both faculty positions will be an integral part of the Outcomes Science Portfolio of MSS, directed by Dr. David Cella, and in MSS’s Quantitative Methods Core, which emphasizes measurement and evaluation of patient reported outcomes (PROs), the use of IRT and CAT for the assessment of neurological and behavioral functioning, as well as a wide range of traditional analytic methods. Expertise in item response theory (IRT) and its application to item and test analysis, item banking procedures and the development of computer adaptive tests is desirable. Experience in managing large scale studies and data management teams is also an asset.
Candidates should have an outstanding record of scholarly publication and a history of extramural funding or exceptional promise of such for junior rank applicants. Candidates with experience in industry or educational testing settings are also encouraged to apply for this position. MSS has a highly collaborative culture in which multiple investigators work in tandem on large-scale outcome science research. For both positions a collaborative orientation and skill at interdisciplinary and team science are desirable. Participation in Departmental training activities and University service are also expected and valued.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials.
